Haplocheirus

Description

Haplocheirus sollers was only discovered this week, and it's not one to be forgotten by any maniraptor fan. For one thing, it's a Jurassic alvarezsauroid. The alvarezsauroids are a group of dinosaurs that inlcudes Albertonykus borealis and other small, stubby-armed dinosaurs. Before the discovery of Haplocheirus sollers, they were known only from the Late Cretaceous. Even better, Haplocheirus sollers shows us what basal alvarezsauroids looked like. The Late Cretaceous alvarezsauroids had three fingers, like other maniraptors, but only the thumb had a big, strong claw. The other two fingers were generally clawless, and they were small and insignificant. Haplocheirus sollers' hands, however, were intermediate between those of alvarezsaurids (derived alvarezsauroids) and other maniraptors. It had a big thumb claw as well as fully funtional, clawed second and third fingers.

Not long after I learned about the discovery of this fantastic find, a classmate asked me, "What's up?"

I babbled, "Haplocheirus sollers, it's a basal alvarezsauroid from the Late Jurassic!"

Understandably, that left him looking quite puzzled.

An alvarezsaur older than Archaeopteryx? That's remarkable! In fact, it's almost as remarkable as an abelisaurid older than Ceratosaurus! ;)
